The Galapagos Island trip was a great adventure. We flew into Guayaquil
Saturday, August 05. A representative from the live-aboard Deep Blue greeted
us at the airport. The Deep Blue is the newest live-aboard built in 2003. It
has all the amenities of a first-class dive yacht, including a spacious dry
camera area. The food was excellent and it was nice to see some familiar
crewmember’s faces from my last dive with the Deep Blue that I took two
years ago.
We did our checkout dive at Isla San Cristobel and had fun with the sea
lions. Afterwards we headed north to Isla Daphne Menor for a few dives
before departing for Darwin and the Wolf Islands (we dove from inflatable
Pangas which held eight divers each). On our very first dive at Darwin we
rolled back into the water and almost landed on a whale shark. It was
absolutely spectacular. This was the first of seventeen whale shark
sightings in ten dives over the span of two and a half days. In between
whale shark sightings we passed the time by viewing hammerheads, white tip
and Galapagos sharks. We also saw an abundance of turtles, eels, dolphins
and huge schools of fish. The abundance of marine life in the Galapagos is
phenomenal. I have over 2200 dives in 32 years of diving throughout various
parts of the world. Nothing in comparison comes close to the Galapagos
(Darwin and Wolf Islands) for marine life viewing.
